Engineers will play a pivotal role in building ‘Green Economy’ with mindful development.

The World Engineer Day is to honour and acknowledge their remarkable contribution to shape dreams into reality. The theme ‘Future of Engineering’ sheds light on the direction for new age engineers to traverse towards conscious and balanced development. Sustainable development will augment the nation’s economic growth as well as quality of life. India to grow into a $ 5 trillion climate proofing economy requires development of resilient sectors as a priority. The global warming led rude climatic shocks has nudged economies worldwide to expedite their transition towards a Carbon Neutral Economy by addressing Economic, Social and Environmental issues.

Government has reckoned rapid urbanization as the future economic growth cogwheel along with the need for Blue-Green Infrastructure. Urban cities are key contributors to climate change accounting for 78% of world’s energy & 60% of green gas emissions. This nudges Engineers to reinvent GREEN ENGINEERING to mitigate lingering climatic crisis threat and help building a healthy planet. The concept of Blue infrastructure includes conservation of ocean, seas, wetland, rivers and lakes, recycling water utilities to control rising sea levels. The Green ecosystem is to protect mangroves, forest, plantation, landscapes, organic and vertical gardens to maintain harmonious biodiversity.

Adoption of renewable energy and alternative raw materials will help control rising carbon emissions and enable conducive living for future generations. The future of engineering needs to encompass Smart technologies, utility, and efficiency to sew knots of ecological, social and infrastructure fabric. It demands a paradigm shift from ‘Grey to Green’ infrastructure to restore critical natural ecosystems and integrate resiliency-oriented growth.
